Hello!! In this weeks episode Im chatting to Dietitian Aveen Bannon for our last podcast together - we are chatting about the silent disease, Osteoporosis. We talk about firstly how to prevent this disease because often times it goes undiagnosed until it’s too late. Please share this one with everyone as it can effect everyone!!! Calcium Rich Foods
The best sources of calcium come from dairy foods: (we require 3 portions as an adult every day of calcium rich foods)
Milk
Cheese
Yoghurt
Non Dairy sources
Sardines (with bones)
Green Leafy veg
Calcium enriched soya or nut milks
Tofu
Things to consider…if you are avoiding dairy, you may require twice as much of non dairy sources to meet your requirements
Vitamin D helps the absorption of Calcium - most of us could benefit from taking a supplement in Ireland
Along with eating calcium rich foods - we need to make sure we are doing weight bearing exercise - to keep our bones strong, running, walking, lifting weights, body weight exercise (yoga or Pilates). If you have been diagnosed with Osteoporosis its important to get some advice with an exercise plan - contact your physio or doctor - as starting into a weight lifting programme with already being diagnosed could put your body at risk of fracture…we need to start slowly!
